ASTM E2190 – American tests of insulating glass units

Testing at ift Rosenheim enables glass manufacturers to obtain all tests from a single source in Europe

Before manufacturers of insulating glass units can export their products to the US, tests according to ASTM E2190 (or ASTM E2188/ASTM E2189) are required, among other things. Until now, European IGU manufacturers have been supplying their glass to the US for this purpose.

With tests by ift Rosenheim, manufacturers can test their products in Europe and, for example, obtain the NFRC certification relevant for the US - without long transportation routes for test specimens.

As each manufacturer specifies a different certification body, accreditation of ift tests must be carried out by different organizations. ift Rosenheim is currently recognized by NAMI and NFRC. Further bodies will be available shortly - please contact us.

Your Advantages

More sustainable and shorter transport routes, lower transport costs as well as lower risks when transporting the test specimens (glass breakage, etc.)

A single partner for all tests on insulated glazing units. ift Rosenheim tests IGU according to the world's most popular standards EN 1279, ASTM E2190/E2188/E2189 and CEKAL

All additional performance characteristics can be tested in the ift-laboratories (sound, heat, luminous characteristics, resistance to fire, burglar-resistant properties and much more)

Performances of ift Rosenheim for Testing Insulating Glass Units as per ASTM

ASTM E2190 stipulates the testing of insulating glass units according to the standards ASTM E2188 and E2189.

Test according to ASTM E2188

According to ASTM E2188, the frost/dew points of the insulated glazing units are determined. For this purpose, six panes are stored for a total of 15 weeks in a climatic chamber with high humidity and accelerated weathering. According to ASTM E2190, the final frost/dew points must be -40°C or colder.

Test according to ASTM E2189

The resistance of insulated glazing units to fogging is tested according to ASTM E2189. For this purpose, two panes (double insulating glass) or four panes (triple insulating glass) are placed in a fogging box under UV radiation for seven days. If the panes show no visible fogging, the test is passed.

In the climate chambers in the glass laboratory at ift Rosenheim, glass panes are exposed to accelerated aging processes, for example with the help of UV radiation.
