Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
Creation of
-
Company-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for windows based on average EPDs
-
Average EPDs for all relevant product areas of the building envelope based on the general ift guideline for elaboration of type III environmental product declarations
-
Product-specific/company-specific EPDs for all product areas of the building envelope, if there is no average EPD for a product
You may transfer all EPDs available so far to your company with the help of our questionnaire available on the right (available in German only).
If there is no average EPD for a product, then a product-specific, specially-tailored EPD must be prepared. A specific EPD is considerably more costly and time-consuming for manufacturers, because it involves gathering and evaluating extensive data. However, the specific EPD allows detailed, representative description of the product, which can be used to describe special qualities relevant to the overall life cycle, and used as a differentiating characteristic.
All EPDs published by ift so far are available at www.ift-service.de.
Based on the average documents, samples are created, which can easily be transferred to the manufacturers.
In the course of a public research project, ift Rosenheim has prepared sample EPDs in cooperation with the industry associations. This project is supported and sponsored by the associations involved QKE e.V., VFF e.V., FV S+B e.V. and BF e.V. as well as the research initiative Zukunft Bau (Construction in the future) of the Bundesinstitut für Bau-, Stadt- und Raumforschung (Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Space Research). Other project participants are the IBU e.V. and the PE International AG.
The following EPD are currently available:
-
EPD Flat glass, toughened safety glass and laminated safety glass
-
EPD doors / systems made of wood and wood-based materials (German only)
-
EPD steel doors, gates and flaps of the Schröder system (German only)
-
EPD windows and lift and slide elements made of steel, stainless steel and weatherproof steel
-
EPD facades made of steel, stainless steel and weatherproof steel
-
EPD doors and fire resistant doors made of steel, stainless steel and weatherproof steel
-
EPD electrical control units and pneumatic valves / alert stations
The order forms and model EPDs can also be requested in other languages

Online solution for expeditious and easy preparation of a draft EPD
The online application of "Draft EPDs" facilitates simple and low-cost preparation of an EPD for aluminium, plastic and wooden windows. In doing so, EPDs are generated automatically based on Draft EPDs by confirming various framework conditions. Data was obtained from various companies for the draft EPDs and this data is used to provide mean values in a common "data pool"; they reflect an industry-wide set of mean values and ensure, thus, that the EPDs are suitable for most manufacturers.
Carrying out the Life Cycle Assessment as the basis for an EPD
The Ecological Balance (Life Cycle Assessment) in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14040 and DIN EN ISO 14044 is a significant method for determining the impact of a product on the environment over the entire life cycle (manufacture, utilisation, post-utilisation and recycling).
The data required is collected from manufacturers with the help of questionnaires. In doing so, data about the impact on material and energy is relevant. Finally, the data can be analysed and calculated with the help of software in order to quantify the impact on the environment; such as, for example, the greenhouse potential. These are then the significant statements of an EPD.
