Laboratory Safety in use

Within the legally necessary test method, ift Rosenheim can provide all tests for safety in use (mechanical, electrical and functional) from a single source.

  • Electrical safety: Safety for man and beast; prevention of electric shock, fire and burns
  • Functional safety: Prevention of dangerous movement resulting from software errors and component defects

In addition, all other properties of the respective product standard can be tested, e.g. thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, fire safety and smoke control, impermeability, burglar resistance, etc.


Safety in use of power-operated construction elements

The demand for automatically driven construction elements is growing dynamically as the comfort and the safety improves and the operation is made easier. However, bulding elements with electrical drive unit are considered as machines in terms of the machinery directive and are thus subject to normative safety requirements. Also components (drive units, control units, sensors) are considered for this purpose as “incomplete machine”. 

Manufacturer have to fulfill the requirements of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and the machinery directive with the respective harmonized standards. Legal tests and verifications have to be issued to provide the product with the CE mark and to bring it to the market.

The verification of the safety in use for the “machine part” is necessary by testing of the electrical and functional safety. All other properties (thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, fire safety and smoke control, impermeability, burglar resistance, etc.) have to be tested according to the product standard for windows/external doors (DIN EN 14351-1 and DIN EN 16034), for internal doors (prDIN EN 14351-2 and DIN EN 16034) and for gate, industrial doors and gates (DIN EN 13241-1).


Electrical safety according to DIN EN 60204-1, DIN EN 60335-2-95/-2-103

  • Validation of the suitability of used hardware according to the used regulations on basis of the submitted documents. The required scope of documentation is defined by the test standard.

  • Execution of necessary laboratory tests: Protection against access to live parts | Abnormal and incorrect operation | Inspection of clearances and creepage distances | Resistance to heat and fire

  • Further necessary documents: Testing of transformer/power supply | EMC verification | Testing of IP rating | PAK verification

Electrical safety according to DIN EN 13849-1 and DIN EN 12453

  • Validation of hardware and software according to individual validation plan on basis of the documentation of implementation of functional safety. The required scope of documentation is defined by the test standard.

  • Testing of functional safety at a test sample according to predefined test schedule. The fault simulation comprises of precipitated hardware errors a the component as well as readjusted software errors and foreseeable misuse.

  • Tests are performed depending on the specifications at ift laboratories, at the clients’ premises or on-site.

Certification according to Product Safety Act and guideline 2006/42/EG

  • Planning and organization of legally required documents, like EC type-examination certificate, GS symbol, ift certificate of conformity, CE scheme/international transfer

  • Evaluation and assessment of already existing verifications and test reports for validity according to building law

  • Compilation of a test program with subsequent coordination and execution of the tests

  • Execution of the initial inspection for the surveillance of the factory production control (FPC)
